SELF-DRIVE CAR TOURS
Self Drive CAR TOURS South of England - Coast to Coast to Coast
Explore the beautiful South of England, starting from Oostende or Calais. Visit Canterbury, Kent, Sussex, Dartmoor, Cornwall, North Devon, Bristol, and much more.
Maybe you will even see the contours of what used to be the island of Avalon...
Itinerary:
Day 1
Take the ferry from Oostende or Calais (included) to Britain. You will be heading for Canterbury, the famous historical cathedral city. Explore this wonderful city where old times and medieval times meet.
Stay in a typical Kentish Inn in or near Canterbury.
Day 2
A wonderful opportunity to explore beautiful Kent. This county is well knows for it’s world famous gardens (Sissinghurst, Goodnestone, Mount Ephraim), it’s wonderful castles (Leeds Castle, Hever Castle, Dover Castle) and it’s many attractions (hopfarm, museums, historic dockyard and many more).
Stay in the same hotel as last night
Day 3
Heading west. Through Kent and East and West Sussex take the coastal road. Don’t forget to visit the little town of Arundel, with it’s famous castle. Near Portsmouth you will see on your left hand side the isle of Wight, on the other side of the Solent. Final destination today is the beach resort of Bournemouth, one of the nicest of it’s kind in all Britain.
Here you will stay for one night.
Day 4
On to Dartmoor. But of course you will make a trip to one of the best kept secrets of Britain, The New Forest. This is one of the loveliest landscapes in the country, with dreamy little villages, lots of nature (The New Forest is a National Nature Reserve) and wild horses blocking your way not only in the country, but also in the villages (never order a salad on a terrace; you will have uninvited guests sharing it with you). Past the city of Exeter you enter Dartmoor, the wild and mysterious country with so much to see and to do.
Overnight stay in Dartmoor.
Day 5
Visit the Dartmoor National Park. Be thrilled by the overwhelming wild nature, visit dreamy little villages and find yourselves back in the 19th century. Why not visit the nice town of Tavistock before returning to your accommodation in Dartmoor.
Day 6
Further to Cornwall, the most westerly county of Britain. Admire it’s wild landscapes and also it’s gentle slopes. Be impressed by it’s rough coasts. Lot’s of things to visit here. Try the naval town of Plymouth with it’s historic dockyards and famous ships like the Mary Rose and the Victory. A real must is the Eden Project, spectacular gardens near St. Austell.
Overnight stay in the Penzance / Falmouth region.
Day 7
Another day to discover Cornwall. Try St. Michaels Mount or visit the artist colonies in the little coastal towns. (skip Land’s End, as it is a disappointment).
Overnight stay in the same accommodation as the previous night.
Day 8
Heading north now. We suggest you travel along the beautiful Cornish coast, admiring the rough coast line. A different landscape presents itself t you every other mile.
For the next two nights you will be in North Devon, an area of outstanding beauty. Make a tour through the other National Park, Exmoor, which is very dissimilar to Dartmoor, wooded and gentle.
The next two nights you stay in an accommodation in North Devon (Minehead, Barnstaple).
Day 9
Plenty of time to make yourselves familiar with all the goods North Devon has to offer. Beautiful gardens, lots of sights waiting to be explored. Nice coastal towns, offering splendid sea food and of course the overwhelming nature.
Overnight stay in yesterday’s accommodation.
Day 10
Further to the north-east. Visit the beautiful city of Bristol. Here culture is written with capital letters. Bristol recently was awarded greenest city in Britain.
The area near Bristol is rural and one of the most "typical English landscapes".
By the end of the day arrive in Bath, where you will stay for the night.
Day 11
The beautiful city of Bath is one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. In Roman times the Bath houses here were build, which still exist in all their glory. Take ample time to explore this unique city. If you wish you could also make a visit to the town of Glastonbury, the magical heart of Britain. Legend say it is here that King Arthur was buried. Climb the famous “Tor”, which gives you a magnificent panorama for many miles. Maybe you will even see the contours of what used to be the island of Avalon.
Overnight stay in Bath.
Day 12
Travelling back to Kent. We suggest you avoid the motorways and take a scenic route, bringing you through Wiltshire, via Salisbury (worth a visit) and Hampshire back to Kent. Accommodation will be reserved for you near Maidstone, the administrative capital of the county. Time permitted visit Leeds Castle (the loveliest castle in the world) or the museum of Kentish life.
Day 13
Ample time to discover more of Kent before travelling to the ferry port for your return to the continent.
